The Eastern Paradise of Ilam Nepal "Shree Antu Ilam"

Shree Antu lies in Ilam District in Province No.1 of eastern Nepal. It is a tourist destination famous for the view of sunrise. It is believed that in Nepal firstly sunrise begins from here. Shree Antu is a small, pleasing village with the largest tea estate, beautiful gardens, and an alluring mountain view of the world’s third-highest mountain, i.e. Kanchanjunga (8586m). Apart from tea, the area is also known for growing cardamom, ginger, potatoes, a particular type of chilly (akabare khursani), and a particular type of grass (amliso). The climate in eastern Nepal is generally wetter than further west, with the monsoon clouds arriving from the east. This provides for favorable conditions for growing tea and other crops.

Ilam is home to a variety of ethnicities, like Limbu, Rai, Lepcha, Magar, Tamang, and others. Within Nepal, the Lepcha people are only found in Ilam where their population is probably less than or equal to 4,000. While the Lepcha consider themselves as indigenous to the area, their actual origin is unknown. On the visit to Antu Danda, you also can stay with a Lepcha community (homestay) and learn more about their unique culture and traditions.

It is also known for paying guests and homestay. At the homestay, local people provide local food items along with Antu tea. Similarly, you can have a wonderful sleep experience in the traditional houses made of wood and be more familiar with eastern region cultures and traditions, which is Shree Antu Eco-cultural tourism destination famous for. Every homestay has its separate beautiful garden with different flowers along with Antu special orchid. Antu Danda, Antu Pond, Gufapatal, Mechi River, Nageshwori, Lepcha community and Lepcha museum, Tea and Tea factories, Flowers, are the other major attraction of Shree Antu. Travelers can have a great experience visiting Teagarden, cycling, and horse riding, exploring the overall tea production process through tea factory visits.

From the middle of the autumn i.e October to the beginning of the spring i.e March is the best time to visit Shree Antu. While monsoon i.e June-September is recognized as an unfavorable time to travel because rainfall occurs in this period resulting in high humidity which ultimately hinders the clear view.

Amidst tea gardens and surrounding pine tree forests, the Antu Danda viewpoint offers spectacular views (particularly at sunrise or sunset) over the eastern Himalayas in the north, the plain Terai landscape in the south, and the tea-growing areas of Darjeeling in the east. On clear days Mt. Everest can also be seen.
